Have you ever been tempted to hide your house key under a pot plant or brick so a family member could let themselves in when you’re not there? When it comes to home insurance in Naples, residents may find some policies don’t cover losses from theft if it’s proved you left your house key in an obvious place. It is much better to purchase a key safe or lock box that hangs on your door handle. Here’s how they work:

  • The first step is to get a copy of your house keys made and make sure they unlock the appropriate doors without sticking or jamming.
  • Carefully read through the instructions that come with your key safe.
  • The pre-set manufacturer’s code is usually all zeros with some key safes having combination tumblers, buttons or a dial as their locking system.
  • Set a new code using the reset pin and activate it. Close the compartment door and try your code to ensure it’s working correctly before locking it up again.
  • Enter your code once more, lift the shackle or curved metal bar over your door handle and then push the shackle back into place. Place your house keys inside the compartment and close the lid.

Key safes or lock boxes are usually considered secure and are regularly used by real estate agents but it may be a good idea to check a lock box doesn’t affect the terms of your home insurance in Naples. Homeowners who take security seriously may be able to avoid being burgled and could even reduce the chance of having to claim on their homeowners insurance.
